In December Quedlinburg is transformed into a pre-Christmas dream of a special kind. In the stage set by the historical market square surrounded by old half-timbered houses, all the senses are awakened to impressions that we have associated since our childhood with Christmas. As eye and hunger are satisfied, the ear, as well, should also not be neglected. Listners are treated throughout December to seasonal music- in the city hall, in the theater, in churches and in open, public spaces.
We suggest that you plan your trip to Quedlinburg in December by train or by bus. Please note our special directions to be accessed under the button \"arrival”.
The Christmas Market on the square before the city hall in magnificent half-timbered surroundings has a wide variety of treats and gifts to offer. Special favorites are to be found at the medieval stands.
Unique in all of Germany is our \"Advent in the Courtyards.” On the second and third weekends of Advent, over twenty of the most beautiful inner courtyards display what is otherwise hidden behind their closed doors. In these intimate, historical settings, we offer rarities and small treasures that have been sought out and collected or fabricated especially for these two weekends. And all of this in an atmosphere in which the word \"Christmas” comes to life as Frau Holle, Frau Advent and an Angel appear in person. Even Christmas itself can wait for a few days when \"Advent in the Courtyards” is taking place.
The capacity of trains on the route Quedlinburg-Magdeburg is increased on these two weekends, and, wherever possible, travel by train to \"Advent in the Courtyards” is advised.
The largest Advent calender in Germany is also to be experienced in Quedlinburg. Every day from December 1 to December 24, the door of one of the twenty four houses with Christmas decorations around the castle-hill is opened. Whatever fairy tales and sweet surprises are waiting behind each door, the children discover one day at a time and then only once the door is opened. The children, their parents and their guests meet each day at 16:30 before the Klopstock House on the castle square before they begin their search together for the house with the shining star. From which particular door the star will be shining on any one day is, of course, kept a secret until the search has begun.
Parking in Advent: Quedlinburg has enlarged its capacity for parking at a variety of parking lots. On the week-ends, additional parking space for personal autos is to be found on the Kleers (B6), only a ten minute walk from the market square. A shuttle service is also running, and for buses there is additional parking space on grounds between the Schillerstraße and Gneisenaustraße.
