The Lyonel Feininger Gallery
On the Schlossplatz (castle-square) beneath the castle and the collegiate church St. Servatius, you will find the entrance to the Lyonel Feininger Gallery.
The Gallery was opened in 1986 and contains the most comprehensive collection of Feininger\'s graphic work to be found in Europe. This German-American artist can be regarded as an important representative of the \"Classical Modern\" art-period.
The collection is comprised of woodcuts, lithographs, water-colors and other drawings and sketches dating from 1906 to 1937. Some early paintings are included as well. The presentation follows chronological as well as thematic and stylistic criteria, taking into account contemporary intellectual and aesthetic perspectives and debates. In 1997, a new wing of the gallery was opened, allowing for an even more comprehensive presentation of the Feininger collection and its relevance within the context of the Classical Modern tradition as well as that of contemporary art.
Since the beginning of March 2005, important additions have been made to the Feininger Collection through extremely valuable donations and loans by major foundations.
Open throughout the year daily except Monday.
