The Convent of St. Mary (Marienkloster) on the Münzerberg
On a facing hill (the Münzenberg) directly across from the Castle Hill, the Abbess Mathilde - as her donation for the well-being of the soul of her prematurely deceased brother Otto II.- provided the resources to establish the Convent of St. Mary. Up until the disturbances of the Peasants War in 1525, Benedictine nuns lived there; after the plundering that occurred in the course of the uprisings, the abandoned buildings fell into decay. Decades later, the Münzenberg was resettled by indigent musicians, tinkers and scissor sharpeners. The remains of the convent disappeared beneath a cluster of tiny half-timbered houses built directly over the ruins, which up to this day constitute the charm of the Münzenberg.
